The Relief Of Derry (1990) in a symphony composed by Shaun Davey as a contribution to the peace process in Ireland.
The work was commissioned by the City of Derry to mark the third anniversary of the famous Derry site, which took place in 1689, when troops the Catholic King James II of England laid siege to the walled city which housed the local Protestant population to the lifting thereof, prior to King's final defeat at the Battle of the Boyne .
In this way, through music, politicians sought a reconcilición among the descendants of those who fought on both sides.
The annual parade Derry Apprentice has turned into riots that have historically faced Protestant unionists and Catholic nationalists in the context of the conflict in Northern Ireland. Since the peace process that ended in the Good Friday Agreement, has opted for a more conciliatory approach to the parades, and in recent years they have been virtually free problems.
Symphony was performed in a completely depoliticized and conciliatory act in which members of both communities, Protestant and Catholic, making a very emotional that you should get past differences.
The first movement represents, in musical terms, the closing of the gates of the city in charge of Derry Apprentice , continuing the bombardment and siege that killed more than 15,000 people.
trumpets and martial bagpipe band transmit the sensation of being inside the besieged city.
The second movement is conceived as an extended battle sequence that culminates in an exciting encounter between the orchestra and pipe band.
Three soloists stand out in the third movement, which describes the suffering of combatants and night vision of a white horse as a symbol of hope.
The theme played by Liam O'Flynn Irish bagpiper accompanied by the orchestra, followed by "A White Horse" performed by singer Rita Connolly, are perhaps the best examples of seal distinctive and Shaun Davey staff in relation to the symphonic treatment of traditional music.
The fourth movement is centered a massive cresccendo evokes the passage of ships up the river and help end the siege.
The symphony concludes with a reference to the bells of the church, followed by a theme played by the saxophonist Gerard McChrystal. These express the salvation of the city while a dose of hope and buena voluntad para que juntas, las dos comunidades, alcancen la paz .
Tras su estreno en Derry, The Relief Of Derry se estrenó en el National Concert Hall de Dublín, en presencia de los alcaldes de Dublín y Derry y 14 miembros del Consejo de Derry.
